Roll Call: House Votes to Increase Gas Tax, 105-37, 2013
in the State House of Representatives on March 20, 2013, by a vote of 105-37 Purpose: This is the Agency of Transportation s proposed transportation program exporttrader for fiscal year 2014. It makes miscellaneous additions and changes to the law governing the State s transportation system, and amends the State s taxation of motor fuels. ( Read the Bill ) Analysis: Legislators who voted YES on this bill supported an $21.8 million tax increase on gasoline a roughly 7.5 cent per gallon increase by 2014.Specifically, the bill imposes a 2% sales tax on the price of gasoline (approximately 6.7 cents per gallon) beginning in June, 2013. In 2014 the sales tax will increase another 2% (4% total), accompanied by a 5.9 cent reduction in the current 19 cent per gallon tax to 13.1 cents per gallon exporttrader for a total tax increase of, estimated, 7.5 cents per gallon. In 2015, the sales tax on gas would become linked to inflation, which, in effect, absolves future legislators exporttrader of accountability for rising gas taxes. Note: Legislators received at the time of this vote nearly 14,000 petition signatures exporttrader of Vermonters opposed to any gas tax increase.
